Sixth Sense

We need to be investigating this - a seminal moment in new media, as important as Berners-Lee inventing HTML.

Another Perfect World

Hi everyone,

thought you might be interested in this - its a Channel 4 documentary about on-line 3D immersive worlds.

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/another-perfect-world

The areas of interest that tie in with what John was talking about in Thursdays lecture, is how the real world and the cyberworld collide; the 2 stories in particular that stand out include how an online gaming world from South Korea lead to real life killings - and the guy how made millions selling sex toys in Second Life!!!!

Though nerdy, its a really really cool film

After Effects

Tonight's session will introduce you to After Effects - a motion graphics and compositing tool. I would describe it as Photoshop on acid.

Spaaaaace

I had a closer look at the Sea Dragon – http://seadragon.com/. The idea of applying a less conventional navigation system like this one is a kinda bizarre break from the conventions that suffocate graphic and web design. But once you get used to it, it starts to make perfect sense. The browser plugin used to deliver it probably makes a lot of difference, (Sea Dragon uses some weird witchcraft instead of anything i can identify) but there are loads of design companies adopting this kind of navigation using Flash. In particular, Wefail – http://www.wefail.com

A good example i found was this little nugget!!!

Very cool!

Production Methods

It is quite difficult to find images that match. The technique of using the channels does work really well though!

Commercial Awards/placements

Hi everyone, just found this and thought it was of possible interest to some.

It is a London based thing as far as I am aware but still,

maybe if there is enough interest we can try and give those Londoners a run for their money!

language of new media book - bargain!

I've just ordered a secondhand copy of the L. Manovich book on Amazon.co.uk and they seem to be running a promotion, (at least they offered me one). If you sign up for an Amazon card, you get a £15 voucher. That's about what the book costs so it's like getting it for free, (.75p actually). Just thought you might be interested..

Have a good weekend
